Fact: Reading slowly is more likely to hamper comprehension

Myth: If I slowly read one word at a time I will have better comprehension of what I am reading

Fact: You will enhance your reading ability. You will do it by adopting a totally new and different approach to reading:
- You will learn to read by sight rather than by sound
- You will read for thoughts, not for words

Pacing Sweeps

Pacing is done by placing your pacing hand on the page with your fingertips in the left-hand corner of the page.

Now move your hand lightly across the page from the left to the right margin.

When you reach the right margin do not stop. Continuing with a curved downward movement at the right margin, change direction and move your hand back toward the left margin.

Complete this two-directional move in one smooth action (see fig. 1), with no jerky pauses or sharply angled movements at the margins.

This motion from the left margin to the right and back to the left is called one complete sweep. Repeat this sweep smoothly down the page until you have made several sweeps.

Pacing should be a rhythmic progression across the page, from left to right and back from right to left.

Continue this sweeping motion until you reach the end of the page. Repeat this exercise a number of times until you feel comfortable with this method.
